Goodbye jeans, hello summer dresses! Well, sort of. Once the summer weather kicks into high gear I like to live in comfy cotton dresses. Who's with me? Sometimes even my most favorite pair of jeans can like restrictive heat traps when I'm chasing after a toddler at the park or getting into a hot car to run errands. Your girl needs to breathe! And my favorite kind of dress combo this time of year is a T-shirt dress outfit with sneakers. Cute, casual, comfortable – that's me!
Just like T-shirts, cotton shirt dresses are the perfect base for creating those summer outfits here in the south. While being effortless to style, you can also feel put together too in a simple shirt dress. The best part is that almost all T-shirt dresses work well when paired with sneakers. I mean, we already love all our favorite white sneakers, why not wear them with casual dresses too, right? It's a fun way to give your shirt dress outfit look a sporty twist.
T-Shirt Dress Outfit with Sneakers
A T-shirt dress outfit with sneakers is certainly something I'm familiar with. I'd like to think that I was styling shirt dresses with sneakers long before it was cool, ha! But alas, this fashion pair is super on-trend right now and while it is very easy to pull off, I do have a few styling tips to offer those that may not be sure where to start. So let's talk about how to style a cotton T-shirt dress with sneakers for summer.
How To Style A T Shirt Dress
As I mentioned, this is a pretty easy look to pull together and hard to mess up. But as a petite woman who basically lives in this fashion combination, I've learned a few do's and don'ts when it comes to styling sneakers and a shirt dress together so that you look and feel your best.
Find The Right T-Shirt Dress
There are many different styles of T-shirt dresses out there. Midi, midi, short sleeve, sleeveless, fitted, or oversized. If you dream it, you can have it in a T-shirt dress. I used to love a ruched body-con T-shirt dress but now I find myself gravitating towards styles that are a bit longer and loose-fitting. They're just more comfortable for me and I don't have to worry about panty lines when I wear my sexy grandma underwear. Here are a few options to check out that I've got my eye on right now:
Find The Right Sneakers
Just like with a T-shirt dress, there are just as many styles of sneakers out there to choose from to complete your look. With my petite frame, I tend to stay away from high-top style sneakers or those chunky "dad" sneakers you see around right now. Not that there's anything wrong with them, but I want to still give the illusion of length on my legs and any shoe that comes above my ankle tends to cut my leg off in a weird spot that I don't find flattering.
As a general rule of thumb, I'd say you want to go for opposites when picking your shirt dress length and sneaker height. For example, the midi dress I'm wearing here today is a longer hemline, so I went for a lighter low-rise sneaker with my classic Keds. If you want to do a shorter above-the-knee T-shirt dress, you can definitely wear it with a high top. It's all about balance.
And for the record, sneakers don't have to have laces. I could easily sub in a pair of slip-on sneakers with this T-shirt dress!
Be Sure To Accessorize
T-shirt dresses, while comfortable and easy, are essentially a blank canvas. Meaning that sometimes they can look a little, umm…boring. So adding on those easy summertime accessories can really take your look from good to great! I went with a classic denim jacket (my absolute favorite is this one from Madewell I've had for a few years) to complete my look.
A denim jacket adds some dimension to an otherwise shapeless dress and sneaker outfit. You could also add a belt to define your waist, kind of like I did with this button-down shirt dress. But I also love the idea of a super cute belt bag with this dress too, perfect when you want to be hands-free. Other great accessories would be to try a long necklace or a straw hat too.
